Those interested in higher education here are within reach of top schools including Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and University of Maryland as well as McDaniel College and Carroll Community College, which offer a variety of certificates.

Living in Carroll County

With 28 public parks and roughly 50 recreational programs in the community, it’s not hard to stay active here. Carroll County residents most notably have many opportunities to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors with the more than 150 miles of cycling trails, all of varying difficulties. Additionally, the Bear Branch Nature Center, Piney Run Park and Morgan Run Natural Environment Area all offer opportunities to get outside.

The Piney Run Park in particular is a gem in the community. Boasting a 300-acre lake and 500 acres of woods, meadows and vast greenspace, the Piney Run Park is a great place for hiking, biking, fishing, picnicking and more.

Due to its location, Carroll County is also known for its delicious wine. Various wine trails and vineyards are scattered throughout the region, offering residents a sniff, swirl and sip into this burgeoning industry. Since 1995, Cygnus Wine Cellar has been crushing grapes. Located in Manchester, a community that dates back to the 1700s, this winery is a local favorite and also an attraction for travelers.

Those residents who prefer a little retail therapy in order to unwind will find a slew of specialty and antique shops along the various Main Streets throughout the county. These small downtown centers are also home to local and unique restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries.
